Michael Bernstein, MD, Named New Surgery Chair at Staten Island University Hospital

Michael O. Bernstein, MD, is Staten Island University Hospital's new chair of the Department of Surgery.

Michael O. Bernstein, MD, FACS, a general surgeon and clinical professor of long standing, will take the helm as chair of the Department of Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH).  

In his new position, Dr. Bernstein assumes leadership responsibilities for SIUH’s multi-faceted surgery department with its dynamic surgical specialties and subspecialties and will be a key player in the further development of advanced procedures, including minimally invasive single incision surgery and robotic procedures.  

With overall responsibilities for managing the quality of surgical care, Dr. Bernstein will oversee SIUH’s two inpatient operating room facilities at the North and South campuses, the network of ambulatory surgery sites and participate in the planning underway for new hybrid operating rooms and updated surgical suites. Additionally, he will lead the surgical teaching program with its residency and fellowship training activities. 

Additionally, as chair of a Northwell Health hospital, Dr. Bernstein will interact collaboratively on Northwell initiatives.   

At the medical school at SUNY Health Science Center, Brooklyn, Dr. Bernstein currently holds the faculty position of clinical associate professor of Surgery and associate program director involved in surgical residency training programs. 

Dr. Bernstein has served as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons one of the nation’s prestigious professional organizations dedicated to excellence in surgery, is vice president of the New York Surgical Society, a member of its executive committee, and is on the board of directors of the Brooklyn Surgical Society.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bernstein served as surgery chair at Richmond University Medical Center, Staten Island, and previously at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. 

Dr. Bernstein earned his medical degree at Pennsylvania State University and completed his surgical residency at SUNY’s King County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY.
