Mayor Makes Stop at High School Health Center

During his citywide tour of schools, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio got a lesson in school-based health care during his visit to Staten Island University Hospital’s center at Port Richmond High School on September 8.

Mr. de Blasio quizzed Jebin Varghese, nurse practitioner (NP), about the various services students can access.

“He was impressed by the idea that we provide mental health assessments at the same time as a medical visit and collaborate with services within the school,” said April Lee, MD, director of Pediatrics Division of Adolescent Medicine and the center’s medical director.

The hospital opened the center at Port Richmond High School last year and has run a school-based health center at Staten Island’s New Dorp High School for 25 years.
