Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center today announced the opening of a state-of-the-art endoscopy suite that provides the most up-to-date procedures in space that is five times larger than where the procedures were previously performed within the hospital.
The 10,253-square-foot endoscopy suite, built at a cost of $14 million, brings a higher level of efficiency with patient care and greater flexibility to treat patients with more-urgent conditions. The expanded facility, located on the hospital’s second floor, is part of LIJ’s goal to build a premier, advanced endoscopy program that also complements the hospital’s growing inpatient cancer services.
“In the past year we were probably seeing about 19 patients per day. Now, doctors will be able to see over 40 patients a day. And the feedback we’re getting from our patients is a true testament to the care that’s being provided here,” said Michael Goldberg, executive director at LIJ Medical Center.
“With additional space now available, LIJ has expanded its advanced therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopic surgery and motility programs, and centers dedicated to treating women’s GI disorders, inflammatory bowel and pancreatic diseases,” said Larry Miller, MD, chief of gastroenterology at LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital.
To diagnose and treat disorders of the gall bladder, biliary ducts and pancreas, endoscopic ultrasound is used to biopsy suspicious masses. The endosurgical program offers the latest minimally invasive technology to treat and cure gastrointestinal malignancies and motility disorders. With all of these procedures, Dr. Miller said patients are in and out of the hospital on the same day, compared to lengthy inpatient stays that were required in the past.
In addition to the enhanced patient care provided at the new facility, Dr. Miller said, “LIJ has expanded its GI clinical research program and academic fellowship program, both of which contribute to better patient care.”
The comprehensive suite features four endoscopy rooms (including two equipped for advanced and therapeutic endoscopy procedures), one motility room designated for the study of specific and difficult-to-treat disorders, and 12 pre/post procedure patient bays equipped with televisions for patient experience along with additional support spaces. The expanded program will allow the endoscopy team to:
- Develop an advanced endoscopy/pancreaticobiliary and general GI/Motility center with emphasis on patient care, teaching and endoscopic research;
- Increase the scope and volume of advanced therapeutic endoscopy services; and
- Develop a direct access program that will streamline the scheduling of colonoscopies and advanced procedures
Noting the hundreds of millions of dollars in renovations that the entire LIJ Medical Center campus has undergone over the past decade, Northwell Health President and CEO Michael J. Dowling said, “LIJ has gone through a major transformation and this new facility is just a small part of that transformation. But at the end of the day, it’s the dedicated physicians, nurses and other staff who care for our patients that make this a special place.”
