Lenox Hill Hospital gynecologic surgeon specializing in the treatment of endometriosis and co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America (EFA), Tamer Seckin, MD, was recently honored with the American Turkish Society’s Philanthropy Award for his groundbreaking achievements in the treatment of endometriosis, as well as for his unwavering commitment to raising awareness about the debilitating disease.

The award was presented to Dr. Seckin by Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the Dr. Oz show, at the Society’s 9th annual Gala, which was attended by more than 350 distinguished guests, including diplomats, scholars, artists, business executives and thought leaders. The Gala celebrates outstanding achievements and contributions by Turkish-Americans in the United States.

After thanking and acknowledging all those who support him in his persistent fight against endometriosis – including his team at Lenox Hill Hospital – Dr. Seckin stressed the importance of raising public awareness of the disease, as well as of the necessity for increased research funding.

“Endometriosis is the most misdiagnosed, untreated, mistreated women’s condition,” said Dr. Seckin. “Our foundation is committed to changing the rhetoric on this. We have gained significant ground on this path and we have more work to do – I am talking about starting a revolution!”

A highlight of the ceremony included a heartfelt video message from actress Lena Dunham, best known as the creator, writer and star of the HBO series Girls and a patient of Dr. Seckin, who has been very vocal about her struggle with endometriosis.

“It’s safe to say that without Tamer [Seckin], I would be living a very different life: one without comfort, one without health, and one without someone who dared to believe my story,” said Dunham. “His insistence that women get the healthcare that they need goes beyond a passion and is truly a life’s mission.”

A pioneer in the treatment of endometriosis, Dr. Seckin’s two decades of surgical experience led him to develop and patent a unique procedure called the Aqua Blue Contrast (ABC) Technique which aids surgeons in identifying endometriosis lesions that are normally imperceptible under regular surgical light. The ABC Technique involves injecting an aqua-colored dye underneath the lining of the abdominal cavity, thereby making lesions and scar tissue more visible to the surgeon’s naked eye. As a result, Dr. Seckin estimates that six to seven times more of the disease is recognized and removed during this type of procedure.

Endometriosis is a debilitating disorder of the female reproductive system in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus becomes attached to organs surrounding the uterus and develops into lesions. The reproductive disorder is often characterized by symptoms, such as abnormally painful and heavy periods, severe cramps, pelvic discomfort, bowel problems, as well as painful sexual intercourse. The disease affects 176 million women worldwide and is a leading cause of infertility and chronic pelvic pain.

Dr. Seckin co-founded the Endometriosis Foundation of America with model and TV host, Padma Lakshmi in 2009. Under his guidance as Medical Director, the organization strives to increase disease recognition, promote early intervention, provide advocacy, facilitate expert surgical training and fund landmark endometriosis research.
