Lenox Hill Hospital today announced the opening of its brand new state-of-the-art Center for Sleep Medicine, complete with seven hotel-quality rooms and the latest high-tech diagnostic equipment to help specialists evaluate and treat a variety of sleep and wakefulness disorders. The center is designed to carry out the full spectrum of sleep medicine evaluations, including overnight and daytime sleep studies, as well as home sleep testing for initial screening of patients with suspected sleep-disordered breathing.
Located at the heart of the hospital and under the guidance of Steven Feinsilver, MD, the director of sleep medicine, the center will focus on solution-based medicine providing patients with personalized treatment plans for conditions, such as snoring, sleep apnea, excessive drowsiness, insomnia and restless leg syndrome, as well as for other less common disorders. The program’s proximity to other departments within the hospital enables the creation of partnerships with primary care physicians allowing for comprehensive, customized care through a multidisciplinary team approach.
“Sleep problems are exceedingly common – so common that everyone should have access to a sleep center,” said Dr. Feinsilver, who has more than 30 years of experience in sleep medicine. “Having a sleep center is an essential part of being a major health care provider, especially in New York City, which really is a city that never sleeps.”
According to recent research published in the journal Sleep Medicine, up to 70 million Americans suffer from some type of sleep disorder and more than 40 million do not get a proper diagnosis or treatment. Dr. Feinsilver emphasizes that getting help for persistent sleep problems may significantly improve one’s quality of life.
