Lenox Hill Hospital opens new $10.7 million cardiothoracic surgery suite

S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, chair of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital cuts the ribbon along with Northwell Health leaders to open the new $10.7 million cardiothoracic surgery suite at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Lenox Hill Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, today announced the opening of a new $10.7 million cardiovascular and thoracic surgery suite, featuring the East Coast’s first advanced robotic system.

The 1,780-square-foot cardiovascular and thoracic surgery suite includes three new cardiac operating rooms, a pretreatment area and a reception space.

“The centerpiece of this new suite is our new hybrid operating room, which can be used for both traditional open surgeries and less invasive procedures,” said S. Jacob Scheinerman, MD, chair of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. “Our investment in this project shows a dedication to providing the best health care possible, and builds on Lenox Hill Hospital’s rich history as one of the nation’s leaders in heart, lung and vascular care.”

Cardiac surgery patients cared for at Lenox Hill Hospital will be among the first in the country to gain access to advanced surgical care at the hands of the ARTIS Pheno, an advanced robotic system that generates 3D X-rays of the blood vessels. This robotic system uses ultra-low-dose radiation for imaging and produces images at a higher resolution and higher speed, resulting in less exposure for both patients and operating room team.

The new hybrid operating room – the largest in Northwell Health – allows patients to be treated with a combination of minimally invasive approaches, offering the long-term benefits of surgery and stenting. It also enables surgeons to perform two procedures at the same time rather than on different days. This allows less stress on the body, reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time for patients.

The hybrid operating room will also enhance cardiac capabilities by allowing clinicians to perform complex cases that may require a combination of procedures from multiple specialists, all in a single room. It will be used for imaging, open-heart surgeries and minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty, angiography, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and endovascular procedures, including thoracic aneurysm stenting and transcatheter mitral valve procedures (TMVR), where surgeons replace or repair mitral valves with a catheter.

“Every detail of our new suite is built with the patient in mind,” Dr. Scheinerman said. “We are truly delivering cutting-edge technology and high quality care.”

Lenox Hill Hospital has a long history as one of the nation’s leaders in heart and vascular care. Its surgeons have been trailblazers in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery since the hospital’s founding in 1857. Lenox Hill doctors were the first to develop and perform many groundbreaking procedures, including the first coronary artery angioplasty in the nation and the first coronary artery stent in New York.

In 2016, Lenox Hill’s Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery achieved some of the state’s best survival rates for coronary artery bypass, valve surgery and transcatheter aortic valve replacement for all discharged cases, according to the state Department of Health’s most-recent statistical analysis of risk-adjusted outcomes for adult cardiac surgery. Lenox Hill Hospital was also among the top 10 percent nationally to receive an overall 3 Star quality rating (the highest ranking) from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Northwell Health has three additional hybrid operating rooms at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. A fifth will be added in 2018 at Staten Island University Hospital.
