NEW YORK, NY – Lenox Hill Hospital recently hosted a three-day in-depth anatomy workshop for a group of middle school students from Riverdale Country School in the Bronx. The seminar was conceived and organized by David Langer, MD, chairman of neurosurgery, who is passionate about encouraging young people to pursue careers in medicine.
The stimulating course included a variety of insightful lectures presented by a range of physicians, including neurosurgeons, cardiologists, pathologists, OB/GYNs and psychologists, as well as other medical professionals, such as nurses, physician assistants and hospital administrators.
The students also received comprehensive tours of the hospital’s emergency room, intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization laboratory, and an operating room. They learned about the basic responsibilities of an EMT and got to explore a fully-functioning ambulance.
The most exciting part of the workshop for the sixth- and eighth-graders was the engaging hands-on activities, such as injecting pig blood into jelly brains to learn about blood circulation in the brain, and practicing sawing and drilling special orthopedic bone models with standard surgical instruments to learn about orthopedic surgery.
“As a healthcare professional, I feel that caring for people and their medical problems is one of the most gratifying and valuable careers that one can pursue,” said Dr. Langer explaining what inspired him to hold the workshop. “By demonstrating how a career in healthcare can save and transform people’s lives, we hope to continue to draw the best, brightest and hardest working youths into the medical field.”
