Steven Feinsilver, MD has been named Director of Sleep Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital effective October 2016. He was previously Director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, a role he held since 2011. Dr. Feinsilver returns to Northwell Health after 11 years: he served as Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at North Shore University Hospital – then part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System – from 1997 to 2005.
In his new role, Dr. Feinsilver will be responsible for the administration and clinical services of the hospital’s brand new state-of-the-art Center for Sleep Medicine. The Center will carry out the full spectrum of sleep medicine evaluations, including – but not limited to – inpatient consultation, overnight polysomnography, titration studies, and the multiple sleep latency test. In addition, the Center will conduct in-lab studies on bariatric patients who may require evaluation and treatment for obstructive sleep apnea prior to or following gastric bypass surgery. Home sleep testing will also be available for initial screening of patients with suspected sleep-disordered breathing.
Dr. Feinsilver is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He was the Governor of New York State for the American College of Chest Physicians from 2005 to 2009 and has been on the Steering Committee for the Sleep Institute of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. Feinsilver has published more than 100 articles and book chapters, and edited a textbook on bronchoscopy. He is a reviewer for the medical journals Sleep, Sleep and Breathing, Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, and Chest.
Dr. Feinsilver received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University in Providence, RI. He completed his medical residency at University Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Feinsilver began his career by serving on the faculty of Brown University for four years. He was then appointed Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory and Sleep Center at Winthrop-University Hospital. In 1997, Dr. Feinsilver accepted a leadership position at North Shore University Hospital before moving on to Cardiovascular Medical Associates in March 2005. He left the practice in 2011 for a position at Mount Sinai. He is triple board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and sleep medicine.
