Huntington Hospital has begun offering women the option of what Mitchell Kramer, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology, called a “gentle C section” when delivering their baby.
This form of a Caesarean section can allow women to see their child as it is being born and have immediate skin-to-skin contact, neither of which are possible with a traditional C section.
“Allowing the maternal-baby bonding experience to begin as soon as possible has been shown to be beneficial with breastfeeding and even help prevent or lessen postpartum depression,” Dr. Kramer said. “This is one of the many options women have for childbirth at Huntington Hospital.”
Expectant mothers who deliver at Huntington Hospital will stay in the hospital’s newest unit featuring all private rooms with en suite, full bathrooms in a spacious layout. Their experience will be enhanced with amenities such as a surf and turf dinner and a plush bathrobe.
Huntington Hospital also offers couplet care or “rooming in,” which is where mothers can have their newborn stay in the hospital room with them. The hospital also has a full service nursery available. Couplet care has been shown to enhance bonding and breastfeeding success.
“We are committed to providing the women of Suffolk County with the best birthing experience possible from our highly skilled and trained physicians and nursing staff to the accommodations they stay in with their new family,” said Gerard Brogan, Jr., MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital. “Expanding a family is one of the most memorable experiences a person can have and we take that very seriously at Huntington Hospital.”
