Girl Scouts Visit Medical Sim Lab

These Girl Scouts received a lesson in health care.

More than 30 members of Girl Scouts Troop 1076 of East Williston, NY, recently got an up-close glimpse of the latest technology used to train physicians, nurses and other medical professionals without risk to real patients. The girls visited Northwell Health’s Patient Safety Institute (PSI) in Lake Success, NY, one of the nation’s largest medical simulation centers.

Trained instructors in control rooms with one-way mirrors manipulate the patient simulators to mimic virtually any medical scenario, enabling clinicians to hone their skills.

“The program enabled the girls to think about their futures, get exposure to health care, and learn about and appreciate the training that health care professionals need,” said one of the troop leaders, Lisa Hayes, MD, an infectious disease physician at North Shore University Hospital.

Judith Heller, an assistant vice president of physician recruiting at Northwell, posed this question to the girls at the beginning of their visit: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Overwhelmingly, she said, the response was teacher, singer and actress. "I’m proud to say that after an afternoon at the Patient Safety Institute, some of the girls left saying, `I could be a doctor!’"
