Long Island Jewish Medical Center at Valley Stream is currently seeking eligible candidates in need of knee or hip replacement surgery. Through a national program called Operation Walk USA, LIJ at Valley Stream and two other Northwell Health facilities, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY, are offering the orthopedic surgeries at no cost to up to six patients who meet the criteria.

Eligible candidates must be US citizens or legal residents, have no insurance, and be within 300 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, which equates to $72,900 for a family of four. Candidates must also be in need of primary total hip or knee replacement and live within an hour drive of LIJ Valley Stream.  Surgeries, pre-operative clearances, and post-operative care are all being offered at no cost to qualified patients.

The screening process for potential candidates is going on now, with surgeries taking place during the first week of December 2016.

Since Operation Walk USA started in 2010, it has helped almost 500 patients across the country recover from disabling arthritis. Giles R. Scuderi, MD, vice president of orthopedics for Northwell Health, is one of the founding members of Operation Walk USA. Dr. Scuderi has performed surgeries on behalf of this medical humanitarian group for the past five years at LIJ Valley Stream.

“With Operation Walk USA, it gives us a chance to give back to our community,” Dr. Scuderi said. “There are patients who are disabled by their arthritic knee or hip, who for financial reasons couldn’t get the benefit of a joint replacement and I want to make our services available to them. That’s why, with the help of my colleagues on the board and the founding members, we formed Operation Walk USA.”

“Two years after having two total hip replacement surgeries, life is drastically different. The excruciating pain is gone and so is the prospect of ending up in a wheelchair,” said David Chalker an Operation Walk recipient. “I can now enjoy most of what I used to do before the pain had become unbearable. No words could ever be adequate enough to express our gratitude to Operation Walk USA, LIJ Valley Stream Hospital, and its staff, and of course Dr. Hepinstall & Dr. Scuderi!”
