Fire at LIJ Quickly Extinguished

A fire broke out Saturday at 9:06 a.m. in a materials support closet on the second floor of Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. The fire was quickly spotted, contained and fully extinguished by LIJ staff and the Fire Department of New York.

The fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire, but it is considered accidental.  By late this morning, firefighters had left the scene.

There was smoke and water damage, and clean-up efforts are ongoing.

No patients were injured and none were ever in danger, although some had to be relocated to other rooms because of smoke.

The LIJ Emergency Department is currently diverting local ambulances to other hospitals as clean-up efforts continue, but the hospital is expected to resume normal operations later this afternoon.
