Lior Brimberg, PhD, assistant professor at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, received the Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Autism Research (INSAR) for her innovative work in helping to identify the causes of Autism. The award was presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in San-Francisco, CA.
The INSAR’s Young Investigator Award recognizes the best Autism-related empirical research studies conducted by up-and-coming scientists who received their PhD or MD in the past seven years and whose papers were published or in press during 2016. Dr. Brimberg’s paper titled, “Caspr2-reactive Antibody Cloned from a Mother of an ASD Child Mediates an ASD-like Phenotype in Mice,” co-authored by Dr. Brimberg and Simone Mader, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the Feinstein Institute, found that exposure to a mother’s brain-reactive antibodies while the fetus is in the womb could lead to a higher risk for developing an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), particularly in males. These findings could lead to potential diagnostic and preventative strategies for Autism.
