Cohen's Jeffrey Lipton, MD, Earns American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Award

Cohen Children’s Medical Center's Jeffrey M. Lipton, MD.

Jeffrey M. Lipton, MD, PhD, director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, is the 2017 recipient of the esteemed George R. Buchanan Lectureship Award bestowed by the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO).

The award, which recognizes a national or international expert in pediatric hematology/oncology, will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology presented in Montreal on April 26, 2017. Dr. Lipton was selected as the award recipient based on his significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) and other bone marrow failure syndromes all while serving as an inspiring mentor and advocate for those who trained or worked with him or who were cared for by him. Upon receiving the award, Dr. Lipton will present “Big Lessons from a Small Disease: Stumbling from Failure to Failure with No Loss of Enthusiasm.”

Throughout his career, trainees have recognized Dr. Lipton as an excellent teacher who was instrumental in their paths to leadership positions across the country or their motivation to pursue research paths. Dr. Lipton exemplifies the role which Dr. Buchanan modeled in clinical excellence, patient and family advocacy, leadership, and an encyclopedic understanding of the field’s literature, scholarship, mentorship, and research. A visionary in the field, Dr. Lipton’s contributions to pediatric hematology/oncology will benefit patients, families, trainees, and practicing physicians for years to come. His penchant for collaboration and excellence in patient care and academics prepared him to serve as the ASPHO Board of Trustees President from 2010-2012, a time requiring rapid responses to important issues such as drug shortages, quality improvement, and diversity within the pediatric hematology/oncology field.

Upon completing his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Syracuse, Dr. Lipton received his MD from St. Louis University, and pursued his residency at Boston’s Children’s Hospital and fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute where his interest in erythropoiesis, general hematopoiesis, and bone marrow failure began. He launched his career at Columbia University then moved into the role of Chief of Pediatric Hematology Oncology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and eventually Cohen Children’s Medical Center. In those roles, Dr. Lipton created a care delivery system with excellence in outcomes, safety and value where patient care is based on critical thinking, evidence, compassion and collaboration.

Dr. Lipton will be presented with the award at the ASPHO Annual Meeting, where practitioners, investigators and administrators from over 30 countries gather to learn advancements in research and treatment for children and adolescents with blood disorders and cancer. Founded in 1981, ASPHO advances research, education, treatment, and professional practice in support of pediatric hematology/oncology professionals, including more than 2,000 members.
