LAKE SUCCESS, NY – For patients who receive their cancer-fighting treatments at the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute in Lake Success, NY, the recent addition of a physician specializing in cancer rehabilitation to coordinate their rehabilitation care makes a return to quality of life that much smoother.
“Cancer patients today are surviving cancer because of advancements in early detection and better cancer fighting therapies, but they are also likely to be living with disability and pain incurred from the cancer itself or cancer treatments, such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy,” said Susan Maltser, DO, division chief of Cancer Rehabilitation at North Shore-LIJ Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Since May, Dr. Maltser has been treating patients at the North Shore’s Center for Advanced Medicine and the Cancer Institute for pain and functional decline from head and neck, breast and other cancers. Common conditions treated are lymphedema, musculoskeletal pain, neuropathy and impaired mobility.p
Dr. Maltser prescribes medications, performs selected injections and prescribes physical, occupational, speech and lymphedema therapy. These outpatient therapy services are offered at STARS Manhasset, East Meadow and Huntington as well as at Glen Cove and Southside hospitals.
“Studies demonstrate that the vast majority of cancer patients have some type of rehabilitation need, and that suffering from the disability caused by cancer can be more stressful than the cancer diagnosis itself.”
Cancer rehabilitation aims to restore function and quality of life for cancer survivors by treating pain and disability throughout the continuum of care, from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.
