SLEEPY HOLLOW, New York A milestone celebration was held on Monday, June 27, at Phelps Hospital to mark the official opening of its new main entrance and beautifully appointed lobby. State Senator Terrence Murphy presented a congratulatory proclamation, and one was also received from State Senator David Carlucci. Guests included local community leaders and residents, donors, physicians and hospital staff. High above the grand entrance, on the façade of the hospital’s medical services building, an eye-catching sign displaying the Phelps Hospital/Northwell Health logo drew much attention. Northwell is the health system that Phelps joined 18 months ago, and Phelps was the first Northwell hospital to have the system’s sign installed on one of its buildings

A special guest at the celebration was David Rockefeller, representing his family, whose steady support of Phelps dates back 125 years, when his great uncle William Rockefeller funded the opening of a single-room, three-bedded facility known as Tarrytown Hospital.  In 1906, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Sr., made the first major pledge to support local healthcare, and his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., became active in the affairs and finances of Tarrytown Hospital and another small hospital that opened in Ossining around 1907. In 1949, in response to increased demand for hospital services, David’s brother, John D. Rockefeller III, led the initiative to build a new, larger and centrally located hospital. The Rockefeller family ultimately donated $1,225,000 for the new hospital, with the condition that the amount be matched by the community. Over the next two years, area residents, businesses and physicians gave the matching funds – demonstrating their strong desire to have the new community hospital, which opened in 1956 as Phelps Memorial Hospital.

“The Rockefellers have been very important partners of Phelps,” said Phelps Board Chairman Richard Sinni. “Without their contributions, this hospital would not exist.” Mr. Sinni also thanked the Villages of Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown and Ossining and the Town of Mount Pleasant for their continued support, and he saluted the hospital volunteers and Phelps Auxiliary for their immeasurable contributions to the hospital. A seating area in the lobby was dedicated to one long-time auxilian and volunteer, Eva Marie Dahling of Sleepy Hollow and her late husband, Gunther.

The hospital’s dramatic lobby and modern signage herald a new era; bridging the stand-alone hospital that opened 60 years ago with the Rockefellers’ backing, to Phelps Hospital today, which continues to fulfill its mission as a community hospital with the enduring support of local residents as well as Northwell Health. “Together with Northwell, Phelps is sending the message that it will be here for generations to come,” said Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett, who attended the ceremony on behalf of County Executive Rob Astorino. The importance of community hospitals was highlighted by Dennis Connors, Sr. VP, Regional Executive Director of Northwell Health, who noted that in addition to providing easily accessible medical services, community hospitals produce an economic benefit locally.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience during the months of construction, and we are extremely proud of the results,” said Daniel Blum, Phelps’ president & CEO. “We now have a unique environment with intimate seating arrangements, increased comfort and privacy and even work stations and a coffee bar. The new lobby is just one of the many enhancements that have taken place at Phelps recently, and all of the changes are contributing to our ability to provide our community with exceptional care.”
