Pat Bowlen’s Decision Highlights Importance of Planning

GREAT NECK, NY – The Denver Broncos’ Owner Pat Bowlen stepping down due to Alzheimer’s disease highlights the importance of recognizing your mental, physical and emotional capacities, a New York geriatrician says.

“I think it’s extremely important early on, when you notice you’re not performing the way you used to perform say 10 years ago, to put in place a support system, counselor, assistants who will guide you as you progress with your illness,” says Gisele Wolf-Klein, MD, director of geriatric education at the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
It is also important for those with Alzheimer’s disease seeking medical care to make their wishes known while they are able to and to put in place things such as a healthcare proxy, Dr. Wolf-Klein adds.
“It is critically important for me to establish in context with the patient’s full trust what it is that they want in terms of goals of care,” Dr. Wolf-Klein says.
