NSUH Baby Boom

North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, L.I., has asked for state permission to increase the size of its labor and delivery unit by three rooms. The hospital is planning to add two labor and delivery rooms and one C-section operating room to cope with demand, according to its certificate-of-need application. “The current complement of 12 LDRs and three C-section rooms is not enough to efficiently accommodate the delivery volume,” the application reads. The C-section rate at NSUH is about 40%, which is higher than in the surrounding area. The hospital attributes this result to its high-risk maternal-fetal medicine program and a large volume of patients older than 40. The project will cost $15.8 million and should be finished by October 2015, the hospital said.
