Northwell Plans $16M Ambulatory Surgery Center
Northwell Health and Endo Group, which jointly run the Garden City SurgiCenter for eye care, are planning a second site in Syosset, L.I., that will offer procedures targeting older adults. The $16 million Syosset SurgiCenter will occupy an 18,000-square-foot building that Northwell will sublease to Endo Group if the plan receives state approval. The 47 ophthalmologic surgeons who have committed to staffing the new center are currently performing their procedures at Davis Vision Eye Surgery Center at Syosset Hospital and other sites in Queens and Suffolk and Nassau counties, according to the certificate-of-need application submitted to the state. The majority of the roughly 11,000 surgeries those surgeons perform each year are for cataracts in older adults. To complement its eye care, the Syosset site will offer orthopedic and ENT procedures as well, which Endo Group says will target the area's growing elderly population. Endo Group projected that its eye surgeons would perform 4,940 ophthalmological procedures in the first year, and as many surgeries as its Garden City Surgicenter (about 6,000 cases annually) within three years. It also projects that its staff will perform about 1,000 additional procedures in year one, ramping up to nearly 1,300 in year three.
