MANHASSET, NY – Robert A. Duarte, MD, director of Northwell Health’s Pain Center in Great Neck, NY, has been appointed to a two-year term as President of the New York State Pain Society (NYSPS), the health system announced today.
“I am honored that the NYSPS has appointed me as President of this prestigious, regional organization,” said Dr. Duarte. “In my new role as President, my primary focus will be on education for the practitioner, the public and the legislature. These are exciting, but unsure times in pain management and it is our responsibility to be the leaders in policy-making, education and the development of guidelines for future pain management practitioners.”Affecting over 100 million Americans, chronic pain is a significant health problem. Founded in July 2011, the NYSPS was created because many physicians and caregivers in New York voiced the importance and critical need of creating a regional pain society.
“Not only do pain specialists need to be educated about proper pain management, but all providers that evaluate and treat chronic pain conditions require up-to-date information. Additionally, we intend to fill the void in medical school education by providing formal teaching in pain management for our future physicians,” said Dr. Duarte.
At the NYSPS’s annual pain meeting held earlier this month, Dr. Duarte said many of the topics, the society looks to address including the safe prescribing of opioids and the law; prescription drug abuse; neuropathic pain; complementary and new innovative therapies; interventional treatments new ultrasound techniques and the pros and cons of medical marijuana were all discussed.
“Even though we have a lot of work ahead of us, I am very excited about the future,” said Dr. Duarte. “As a multi-disciplinary Society, we welcome clinicians from all specialties to join and be a part of our ever-growing organization.”
