North Shore University Hospital, LIJ Integrate Cardiac Surgery in Manhasset

With heart procedures that offer outcomes among the best in the state, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and LIJ Medical Center have established an integrated cardiac surgery program on NSUH’s Manhasset campus.

NSUH and LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park have had a shared Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery for more than a dozen years, but each hospital has maintained its own cardiac surgery program, despite being only 1.5 miles apart. The new Cardiovascular Care Center gathers all cardiovascular and thoracic surgery staff members under one roof.

The Cleveland Clinic recommended unifying cardiac surgery services in one location when it assessed the Northwell program in 2014. That year, the nation’s pre-eminent heart program selected NSUH as the metro New York area’s only member of the Cleveland Clinic Heart & Vascular Institute and the Cleveland Clinic Cardiovascular Specialty Network.

“Both North Shore and LIJ will continue to deliver a full range of interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, noninvasive testing, clinical cardiology and heart failure services,” said Stanley Katz, MD, senior vice president and executive director of cardiac services for Northwell Health. “However, this fall, we began to perform all elective [scheduled] cardiac surgeries at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.”

LIJ continues to perform high-volume pediatric cardiac surgery, said Alan Hartman, MD, senior vice president and executive director of cardiothoracic services for Northwell Health and chair of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at NSUH and LIJ. Dr. Hartman added that all scheduled coronary artery bypass graft surgeries and/or surgeries to repair or replace heart valves are now performed at North Shore University Hospital’s new Cardiovascular Care Center.

“Integrating all 110 members of the cardiac surgery teams helps us enhance the coordination of clinical care, invest more efficiently in infrastructure and leading technology, and expand opportunities for clinical trials,” said Dr. Hartman.

Over the past several months, 50 staff members from LIJ’s cardiac surgery team — recently recognized by the New York State Department of Health for superior outcomes — have transitioned to the Manhasset campus, bringing together all 110 members of the NSUH and LIJ Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. While the cardiac surgery services team is being integrated on the NSUH campus, LIJ Medical Center is fortifying its comprehensive cancer program. LIJ is expanding services for patients undergoing surgery for thoracic, head and neck, gynecologic, breast or urologic cancer, and plans to add other surgical oncology services.

The LIJ location is ideal, considering its proximity to the Northwell Cancer Institute, which recently expanded its outpatient programs at the Center for Advanced Medicine in Lake Success.

“As medicine has advanced, specialization in clinical expertise has become even more important,” said Chantal Weinhold, senior vice president and executive director of Northwell Health’s central region, which includes NSUH and LIJ. “That’s why NSUH and LIJ Medical Center are evolving to specialize in treatment areas that are important to our communities.”
