North Shore University Hospital Auxiliary named Auxiliary of the Year

NSUH auxiliary named auxiliary of the year by HANYS

MANHASSET, NY – The North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) Auxiliary’s commitment to the health of the community, both inside and out of the hospital, was recognized by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) as Auxiliary of the year, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today.

The North Shore group also won the award in 2009.

Winning in the Large Health Care Facility category, the NSUH Auxiliary will receive its award today at a ceremony in Albany, N.Y.

Each year, HANYS recognizes two auxiliaries – a large health care facility and a small one – that demonstrate a commitment to participating in advocacy activities on behalf of their hospitals, their communities and the state's health care system.

“This award by HANYS confirms what we at North Shore University Hospital have long-known, that our Auxilians go above and beyond in supporting our hospital’s mission to serve the health care needs of Long Island,” said Alessandro Bellucci, MD, executive director of NSUH.  “That they’ve won it twice speaks volumes of their dedication and commitment.”

More than 60 Auxilians, support the NSUH Service Auxiliary, led by President Marilyn Sturtevant, a volunteer with the hospital since 2000.

The Auxiliary has been a vital force in raising funds to help expand and evolve NSUH since before the hospital – then known as North Shore Hospital – was opened in 1953. Its efforts provide important services and programs in the hospital and out in the community.

Through a joint initiative with the local Lion’s Club and NSUH’s Diabetes Wellness Program, the Auxiliary helps provide diabetes education/prevention through health screenings in high-risk and underserved communities. As a result, more than 400 people were screened for diabetes last year and 180 were found to be prediabetic or diabetic.

The Auxiliary also helps pay for the  transportation needs of AIDS patients through grants, provides scholarship funds for NSHU’s junior volunteers and  raises awareness of hospital programs through its Auxiliary newsletter, “The Volunteer Voice,” which is distributed to local community centers, houses of worships and libraries.

For the last two years, the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts have yielded $1 million toward its $2 million commitment to support building a new air ambulance helipad for NSUH’s Trauma Center.
