MANHASSET, NY – Several staff members from North Shore-LIJ’s stroke neurology team recently participated in the Network of Indian Professionals (NetIP) annual health fair held in New York City.
Celebrating 25 years as North America’s leading organization for all South Asian professionals, NetIP invited North Shore-LIJ’s stroke neurology team to its health fair held on October 10th to talk about the common risk factors of heart disease and stroke.
Physicians from both North Shore University Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital participated in NetIP’s health fair to educate South Asian professionals about the various stroke services the health system provides to the community on Long Island, Queens, and Manhattan.
“South Asians have four times greater risk of heart disease than the general population and the incidence of stroke is excessively higher in South Asians when compared with Caucasians,” said Rohan Arora, MD, vascular neurologist at North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI). “The South Asian region includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Our participation in the health fair was primarily to target younger individuals since the prevalence of stroke and mortality from stroke is high in this age group amongst South Asians.”
Within the North Shore-LIJ Health System, there are 13 New York State Department of Health Designated Stroke Centers. In addition, the health system is the only provider of state-of-the-art telestroke services on Long Island. The telestroke program allows for North Shore-LIJ’s stroke certified neurologists to perform remote neurological exams from any location outside of the hospital. The stroke neurologists are then able to communicate with emergency medicine personnel and the stroke patient at remote sites using digital video cameras to assist them in diagnosing stroke and provide lifesaving treatment recommendations.
