MASSAPEQUA, NY – Representatives from the North Shore-LIJ Health System on Thursday joined with local elected officials, community and business leaders to celebrate the opening of the GoHealth Urgent Care Center in Massapequa, NY.
The new facility, located at 5165 Merrick Road, is the first of several GoHealth Urgent Care Centers opening on Long Island in the coming weeks. In addition to Massapequa, GoHealth Urgent Care Centers are scheduled to open in early 2015 in Plainview, Bay Shore and Syosset. As part of a collaboration with Access Clinical Partners, North Shore-LIJ is opening 50 GoHealth Urgent Care Centers throughout the metropolitan area over the next three years.
GoHealth Urgent Care Centers treat most non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries during traditional business hours as well as evenings and weekends, offering a convenient alternative to hospital emergency departments.
“With the dramatic changes occurring in healthcare, more and more care is being delivered outside the hospital, so our goal has been to provide the community with convenient access to care that they need when they need it,” said North Shore-LIJ President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Dowling.
Robert Korn, MD, medical director for the GoHealth centers, said the Massapequa location is especially important to the community because the closest hospital is nearly 10 miles away. “Massapequa is a very sports-centric community,” said Dr. Korn, pointing to the Town of Oyster Bay’s John J. Burns Town Park, which includes several sports fields and is located across Merrick Road from the new center. “When kids get injured on the sports field and need to be X-rayed to make sure they haven’t broken a bone or suffered a concussion, we’ll be here for them.”
Thursday’s opening reception at the GoHealth Urgent Care Center in Massapequa attracted numerous elected officials, business and community leaders, including State Senator Michael Venditto, State Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joseph Pinto, Oyster Bay Town Clerk and former Mayor of Massapequa Park James Altadonna Jr., and representatives from the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce.
GoHealth centers will be staffed by doctors, physician assistants and radiology technicians as well as other healthcare workers who can administer care to children and adults consistent with North Shore-LIJ clinical standards. Should a patient require more advanced treatment, they can avail themselves of the full continuum of services offered at North Shore-LIJ Health System’s 18 hospitals and more than 400 outpatient physician practices throughout Long Island, New York City and Westchester County.
The 2,465-square-foot Massapequa facility features a triage room and four private exam rooms. It’s airy and modern look is a hallmark of GoHealth Urgent Care Centers, which are designed to be open and friendly, said Gary Weatherford, chief operating officer of GoHealth. “Our interior design is modeled after the Apple store concept in which less is more,” said Mr. Weatherford.
The Massapequa GoHealth center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 516-858-3724.
