FOREST HILLS, NY – Patients in Forest Hills with ailments that don’t necessarily need to be treated in a hospital emergency department have a new option unveiled today by the North Shore-LIJ Health System in partnership with Access Clinical Partners.
The new North Shore-LIJ GoHealth Urgent Care Center, located at 102-29 Queens Blvd., is the first of 50 sites that will be opening over the next three years throughout the metropolitan area. A second center in Queens is scheduled to open in early 2015 in Corona.
“This is another innovative step the health system is taking to as part of its continuing expansion of services in communities where people live and work,” said North Shore-LIJ President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Dowling.
GoHealth Urgent Care Centers treat most non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries during traditional business hours as well as evenings and weekends, offering a convenient alternative to hospital emergency departments.
The 2,700-square-foot facility in Forest Hills offers a triage room and four private exam rooms. It’s airy and sleek design is meant to change what people have come to expect of an urgent center, said Si France, MD, GoHealth Founder and CEO. “We try to think of ourselves as bringing the best of retail and hospitality into the healthcare world. We actually have a term for it -- we call it ‘Urgent Care 2.0,’” said Dr. France. “It’s what happened when Apple reinvented the computer store.”
Robert Korn, MD, who will serve as medical director for the GoHealth centers, said they are a portal of entry to other services offered at the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s 18 hospitals and more than 400 outpatient physician practices throughout New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. “When you come to GoHealth, we will know things about you from your medical records that will help us take better care of you,” said Dr. Korn, who served as the longtime head of emergency medicine at Southside Hospital. “So, if you’re on medication, or you have medical problems or have had surgeries, we’ll have access to that information, enabling us to take better care of you.”
GoHealth centers will be staffed by doctors, physician assistants and radiology technicians as well as other health-care workers who can administer care to children and adults consistent with North Shore-LIJ clinical standards.
To meet the needs of its diverse community, the center's staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Portuguese and Cantonese, with other languages made available as needed through translation services.
For State Sen. Toby Stavisky, whose district includes Forest Hills, the opening of an urgent center such as GoHealth has been long overdue. “With the closings of several hospitals in Queens, it places an additional burden on the existing hospitals in the area and we’re delighted that North Shore-LIJ has stepped into this void,” the senator said.
The GoHealth center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 718-502-9798.
