GREAT NECK, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System was recently recognized by the National Patient Safety Foundation and EngagingPatients.org with the John Q. Sherman Award for Excellence in Patient Engagement.
The award recognizes North Shore-LIJ for its efforts to empower consumers with their “eight patient rights” such as the right to understand, participate and consent to care. North Shore- LIJ created a structured, system-wide approach to standardize how patient identification is completed for every patient at every encounter.
All North Shore-LIJ staff who have patient contact have been trained and educated on the eight patient rights and eight critical process steps to ensure patient safety. There have also been technological advances, such as a barcoding system for medication, to aid with patients receiving the proper medication and dosages.
“Our staff takes pride in partnering with our patients, promoting patient safety and improving the patient experience. This program standardized practices and has allowed us to make significant strides with measurable improvement in this area,” said Mark Jarrett, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s chief quality officer.
North Shore-LIJ received the honor during the 2015 NPSF Patient Safety Congress in Austin on April 30.
