North Shore-LIJ Ranks Among Most Diverse, Veteran-Friendly Health Systems
The North Shore-LIJ Health System has been ranked as one of the top 10 hospital systems for its diversity and inclusion practices as well as one of the top 10 companies for veterans by DiversityInc, a leading information management ranking firm that covers this area.
In its first time applying for the distinction, North Shore-LIJ was ranked ninth among the nation’s top hospital systems on the DiversityInc Top 10 Hospital Systems list. Inclusion and diversity have been important missions at North Shore-LIJ for years, both for patients and employees. North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals in New York City and Long Island serve many diverse populations. The health system strives for patient care that is culturally competent, which helps patients feel more safe and comfortable. This type of care also aids patients in feeling that they are a part of their healthcare team.
“To be recognized in DiversityInc’s top 10 health systems list is truly meaningful for us at the North Shore-LIJ Health System as it validates our approach and commitment to the elimination of health disparities,” said Jennifer Mieres, MD, chief diversity and inclusion officer and senior vice president of North Shore-LIJ’s community and public health divisions. “Diversity, inclusion and health literacy are important to the health system’s mission of excellent patient outcomes for all. Advancing cultural and linguistic competence, effective communication and patient and family-centered care is vital to enhance patient outcomes and provide culturally safe and quality care for all.”
North Shore-LIJ promotes diversity, inclusion and health literacy with its employees through education initiatives, policies, hiring practices and community partnerships. The health system offers regular classes for employees on these topics at its corporate university, called the Center for Learning and Innovation. Last year, North Shore-LIJ started business employee resource groups to help encourage and sustain an inclusive work environment. One of these groups, Veterans & Allies: Liaisons of Reintegration, which started earlier this year, focuses on military personnel, their families and veterans. The health system was ranked seventh on DiversityInc’s top 10 companies for veterans list this year.
