North Shore-LIJ Physician Honored for Compassionate Care

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that Vincent Vinciguerra, MD, North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute oncologist, has been recognized for his compassionate patient care with a Gold DOC award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
Dr. Vinciguerra said he always keeps in mind that he should treat his patients the way he and his family would want to be cared for. As healthcare delivery methods constantly change, Dr. Vinciguerra thinks it is important not to lose sight of caring for the patient as a whole and the importance of compassionate, empathetic care.
To help patients celebrate their successes, Dr. Vinciguerra helped to start and is very active in the health system’s annual Cancer Survivors’ Day celebration. “Dr. Vinciguerra goes very far out of his way for his patients,” said Daniel Budman, MD, chief of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute’s hematology division. “Being compassionate is in his blood and he’s been a role model and mentor to many at the Cancer Institute.”

Humanistic healthcare has proven benefits for patients’ outcomes. For instance, in a study that included 710 cancer patients, an empathetic physician’s care lowered the incidence of depression among patients and increased their quality of life, according to the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, an international not-for-profit organization, has the goal of encouraging compassionate, patient-centered care. Gold DOC is a recognition program established by the foundation to give patients and their families an opportunity to pay tribute publicly and thank physicians and other healthcare professionals who demonstrate exemplary sensitivity and compassion, as well as clinical excellence.
