MINEOLA, NY -- With more than 150,000 veterans in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Long Island hosts the 10th largest veteran population in the country. More often than not, service members require guidance and advocacy to ensure successful reentry into civilian life.
To help veterans find meaningful employment in their local communities, the North Shore-LIJ Health System is joining with Nassau County to present the Barracks to Business: Translating Military Skills into Career Success workshop, which will be held on Oct. 8, in the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, 2nd Floor, Ceremonial Chamber, Mineola.
The workshop, designed to support veterans’ transition from military to civilian employment, will introduce veterans to the health system, which is New York State’s largest private employer with a workforce of more than 61,000. They will also be encouraged to identify their unique strengths and weaknesses; develop a resume; prepare for interviews; and navigate the job search process to obtain civilian employment.
“Hiring leaders throughout the North Shore-LIJ Health System have been trained to identify the many transferrable skill sets of our veterans and their immense value to the organization,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the health system. “Over the past two years, North Shore-LIJ has hired more than 400 veterans who are working throughout the health system in diverse clinical and non-clinical jobs.”
The career workshop – one of more than 50 that have been held for veterans and their spouses on college campuses and county offices throughout the region – is among many initiatives established by the Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services at North Shore-LIJ, which was ranked a 2015 Military Friendly Employer.
The health system’s veteran recruitment efforts complement the clinical services and outreach programs offered by North Shore-LIJ’s Rosen Family Wellness Center for Military Veterans and Their Families in Manhasset andUnified Behavioral Healthcare Center for Military Veterans and Their Families in Bay Shore.
