The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that it is the first radiology service in New York State and the seventh in the country to be designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence™ by the American College of Radiology (ACR). North Shore-LIJ achieved the prestigious, three-year distinction for its best quality-imaging practices and diagnostic care across its hospitals and outpatient imaging facilities.
The designation, which represents the “pinnacle of medical imaging care,” according to the ACR, is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation. The comprehensive assessment of the entire medical imaging practice covers all advanced imaging, such as nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography (CT), mammography and ultrasound, and includes structure and outcomes. The distinction recognizes excellence at multiple levels – including the professional staff, the technology and policies and procedures an organization follows – and superior patient care.
In order to receive this elite recognition, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in all modalities they provide, and in which the ACR offers an accreditation program. Another requirement is to participate in the Dose Index Registry®, a data registry that allows facilities to compare their CT doses to regional and national values, the General Radiology Improvement Database as well as patient-safety oriented programs.
“Earning recognition from the ACR as a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence provides validation that our department performs at the highest level compared to national benchmarks,” said Jason Naidich, MD, chairman of radiology for North Shore-LIJ. “This designation guides patients, referring physicians, and payers in choosing a partner for imaging services. In particular, it demonstrates our commitment to quality, safety, and patient care.”
