North Shore-LIJ Finalizes Deal with Phelps Memorial
By Dan Goldberg
North Shore-L.I.J. has finalized its deal with Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Westchester, the mega-health system's first expansion into the county and outside its traditional base on Long Island and Queens.
Phelps, a 238-bed hospital in Sleepy Hollow which will become the 18th hospital under the L.I.J. umbrella, currently has approximately 1,700 employees, bringing L.I.J.'s workforce to about 50,000, the largest private employer in New York State, according to the Center for Governmental Research.
L.I.J. has agreed to invest capital into Phelps, and can act as a financial backstop for the community hospital.
What L.I.J. hopes to gain with its first foray into Westchester County, is thousands of covered lives and a new market for ambulatory services and its insurance offering, CareConnect, which expanded into Westchester this year.
