MANHASSET, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System was recently designated as a Center of Excellence for Tourette Syndrome by the National Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA). The Tourette Syndrome Association’s Center of Excellence program seeks to improve the quality of life of people with Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders by promoting the highest level of care, research, education/awareness and outreach/advocacy for these conditions.
North Shore-LIJ was recognized for its multispecialty Tourette Syndrome program, as well as for its role in founding the newly established New York State Centers of Excellence Consortium for Tourette Syndrome.
“To be recognized by the TSA as a Center of Excellence is a tribute to the dedication of all of our staff, who tirelessly care for and work with our patients,” said Cathy Budman, MD, director of movement disorders in the North Shore-LIJ Department of Psychiatry. The Center of Excellence at North Shore-LIJ, based at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, will work closely with the Long Island Chapter of the TSA to coordinate and improve services in the community.
The National Tourette Syndrome Association celebrates programs that demonstrate comprehensive care based on the best available evidence and current research findings. It also promotes advocacy and awareness for people touched by TS and other Tic Disorders, and trains and educates clinicians, scientists and other professionals who may become future experts in TS and associated conditions.
North Shore-LIJ was one of the first National TSA Centers of Excellence, which now includes 13 programs nationwide, including three others in New York. The four New York centers, including the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Weill Cornell Medical College, and University of Rochester Medical Center, comprise the newly established New York State Centers of Excellence Consortium for Tourette Syndrome, with the goal of improving clinical care, education, research and advocacy for people with TS throughout New York.
