MANHASSET, NY – Three epilepsy programs within the North Shore-LIJ Health System have been recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
North Shore-LIJ’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY, were recognized as Level 4 centers.
The Epilepsy Center at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY, was acknowledged as Level 3 center.
Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level of medical, psychological, neuropsychological, and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with intractable epilepsy. According to the NAEC guidelines, a Level 4 epilepsy center provides the more complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostic testing including invasive intracranial electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and offers a broad range of surgical procedures for refractory epilepsy.
Level 3 epilepsy centers provide the basic range of medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial services needed to treat patients with refractory epilepsy. In addition, Level 3 epilepsy centers offer noninvasive evaluation for epilepsy surgery, straight-forward resective epilepsy surgery, and implantation of the vagus nerve stimulator.
“We are honored that our epilepsy programs have received this prestigious NAEC recognition,” said Souhel Najjar, MD, senior vice president and executive director of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s neurology service line. “It is a testament to our health system’s dedicated, multidisciplinary team of specialized epilepsy doctors, nurses, monitoring technologists, pharmacists, and social workers.”
