By: Claude Solnik
The North Shore-LIJ Health System has reached an agreement that will make Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., part of the system and expand its presence into Westchester County.
North Shore-LIJ CEO Michael Dowling and Phelps Chair Richard Sinni signed the agreement that already had been approved by the Phelps Board of Directors and the North Shore-LIJ Board of Trustees.
A 58-year-old hospital with 238 beds and nearly 1,700 employees, Phelps will become Great Neck-based North Shore-LIJ’s 18th hospital and increase the system’s workforce to about 50,000, the largest employer in the state, according to the system.
North Shore-LIJ is proceeding with efforts to obtain the approvals it needs to finalize the deal, which is expected to close later this fall.
Dowling said in a written statement that North Shore-LIJ is “committed to strengthening and expanding the clinical services that Phelps provides.” He said as part of the agreement, North Shore-LIJ will invest in infrastructure and expand clinical program at Phelps.
The combination of the two, Sinni said in the statement, will “ensure that Phelps will be able to continue to provide quality care to our community, now and in the future.”
North Shore-LIJ is the biggest hospital system in the region, including more than 6,200 beds, 11,000 nurses, 10,000 affiliated physicians and 500 outpatient physician practices.
