North Shore-LIJ’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center Recognized with Level 4 Designation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers

MANHASSET, NY – North Shore-LIJ’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center has been recognized as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, the highest rating, by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).  Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level of medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

According to the NAEC guidelines, a Level 4 Epilepsy Center should provide the more complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostics monitoring, as well as more extensive medical, neuropsychological, and psychological treatment.  Fourth-level centers also offer a complete evaluation of epilepsy, surgery, including intracranial electrodes, and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious NAEC recognition,” said Cynthia L. Harden, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s chief of epilepsy and electroencephalography and director of North Shore-LIJ’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center. “It is a testament to our dedicated, multidisciplinary team of epilepsy doctors, nurses, pharmacists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and social workers.”

North Shore-LIJ’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center is one of the largest and most comprehensive programs on Long Island for the evaluation and medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy in children and adults.  The center’s epilepsy clinicians use a variety of medical and surgical treatment options for the control and prevention of seizures.  Treatments are based on an individualized assessment of the nature, type and severity of the patient’s disorder.  The center also offers a state-of-the-art video electroencephalogram (EEG) 24/7 monitoring unit which offers patients the safest and most comfortable environment as they come into the hospital for evaluation to determine the specific region of the brain in which the patient’s seizures originate.

“We integrate the expertise of our clinical staff with cutting-edge technology to provide our patients with an accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and improved quality of life,” said Dr. Harden.  “One year after epilepsy surgery, 90 percent of our patients are either seizure free or have reduced seizures.”
