GREAT NECK, NY -- Nicholas A. Sgaglione, MD, chair of orthopedics at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park, was recently elected president of the Arthroscopy Association of North America at the group’s annual meeting held in Orlando, FL. Arthroscopy is a common surgical procedure in which a joint is viewed using a small camera. Arthroscopy gives doctors a clear view inside a joint (most commonly knees and shoulders), which helps them detect and treat orthopedic conditions.
Dr. Sgaglione specializes in sports medicine and joint replacement. Over the last two decades, Dr. Sgaglione has held numerous leadership positions in orthopedic surgery at the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Dr. Sgaglione also holds the position of chairman and professor of orthopedic surgery at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He was named to the “125 Outstanding Knee Surgeons” list in 2012 published by Becker’s Orthopedic, Spine & Pain Management Review
Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Sgaglione received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery from the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute and Southern California Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Group in Van Nuys, CA. His community and sports involvement includes serving as a team physician for the US Merchant Marine Academy and two Long Island high schools as well as an orthopedic consultant to the US Ski Team, the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils.
The Arthroscopy Association of North America is the primary source of continuing medical education for practicing arthoscopists and the most respected conduit for new techniques and information concerning the subspecialty. The association was established in 1981 in response to a growing need for information and research on the technique that is now involved in approximately one-third of all orthopaedic procedures.
