An ob/gyn oncologist said Friday that a new, alternative to Pap tests that zeroes in on the DNA of the human papilloma virus has the potential to better identify the women who require additional testing.
“The exciting thing about this test is that it hopefully will identify the appropriate women who need additional testing and prevent those who don’t need additional testing from having anything further,” said Diana Contreras, MD, division director of gyn/oncology at LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park and physician at the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute. “So the idea is that it will be more specific so we can identify the right women with the right tests.”
The human papilloma virus is the cause of nearly all cervical cancers. Pap tests look for abnormalities in the cervical sample taken from a patient.
