The Madresita Project: Handmade Hats Warm Patients and Lift Spirits

Lenox Hill employee Susana Luna gifts handmade hats to hospital patients, many of whom are going through chemotherapy.

This ongoing gesture is a part of The Madresita Project, an initiative started by Susana to honor her mother, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2012. Nurses at North Shore University Hospital knitted a hat for her mother as she was going through treatment. It offered a welcomed distraction from her treatment, Susana said. This simple act of kindness inspired Susana to do the same for patients at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Susana holds a weekly knitting class to teach other employees to knit and help out the cause of bringing joy to patients and their caregivers.
