LI Cancer Care Market

Memorial Sloan Kettering’s proposed cancer center on Long Island will increase competition among some entrenched players. North Shore-LIJ’s Cancer Institute in Lake Success has 130,000 square feet of clinical space. The system operates five other outpatient cancer centers on the Island and treats more cancer patients than any hospital or health system in the New York area, a spokesman asserted. “Not only does our Cancer Institute provide patients with access to a full range of subspecialty care and clinical research trials, we are able to meet all of their other medical and surgical needs as part of a fully integrated health system,” North Shore-LIJ said in a statement. MSK reports a 19% market share in Nassau County. Most patients travel to Manhattan for care. “There will be tremendous demand for oncology care in the future,” said Margaret Burke, MSK’s senior vice president of ambulatory care and hospital operations. “We certainly feel like there is going to be a big need that multiple players will help satisfy.”
