Our long journey of infertility began in 2007 when we naively decided to “get off the pill” and get pregnant. A year had gone by before we started really trying (monitoring cycles, ovulation dates, and body temperature), and another six months before we met with a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) and started taking tests. We found out that my husband had severe sperm-related issues in terms of low sperm count, motility and morphology, and we decided to try intrauterine insemination (IUI). After two failed IUIs, we were told that our success chances with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) are high, especially if it included a process called Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), which helps the sperm fertilize the egg by it being injected directly into each egg. And so IVF was introduced into our world.
Unfortunately the first IVF failed, as did the second and the third. Each cycle had a different protocol, different hormones and of different dosages, and a new wave of hope accompanying it. Although my work provides for a very good insurance plan, except for the medications, the insurance did not contribute to any of the cycles, which is why we took between six months to a year between each cycle to save up for the costly procedures. Since we are both Israelis who have been living in New York for over sixteen years, by late 2010 we decided to give Israel a chance and have the fourth IVF cycle done with a well known Israeli RE who has high success rates. Pumped with hormones and a new sense of hope we travelled to Israel in February 2011, but unfortunately that cycle too failed. So after four years, with two failed IUIs and four failed IVFs, and more than $80,000, we really started losing hope to ever get pregnant with our genetic materials.
It was then that we met the wonderful Dr. Singer, who, with his special warmth, big smile, and years of experience, suggested we meet with him and one more RE in Long Island, Dr. Hershlag, before we give up on the idea of getting pregnant. We immediately decided to go for round number five the following month. The procedure was not new to us in any way, but with Dr. Singer following up on each step with interest and concern were all wonderful additions. The cycle was successful. I am now five months pregnant expecting our first son. I could not thank Dr. Hershlag and Dr. Singer enough for helping us bring a dream to reality!
