New York Rangers forward Martin St. Louis knows the importance of heart health. His mother was just 63 years old when she passed away last year from a sudden heart attack. For that reason, he is teaming up with Lenox Hill Hospital, the official hospital of the New York Rangers, to raise awareness about heart disease and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“My mother was the best human being I have ever known in my life,” Mr. St. Louis said. “If I can help educate people about their risk of heart disease or help prevent even one death, I know that is something she would want me to do.”
A special video will debut at the New York Rangers’ home game on February 2 and will run throughout February during all seven home games at Madison Square Garden, and on local television and radio stations. It can be seen at rangers.lenoxhillhospital.org, where viewers can join the Rangers’ right winger in becoming a heart healthy MVP by learning about simple lifestyle changes that can reduce heart disease risk.
"Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States, more than all cancers combined,” said Varinder Singh, MD, chair of cardiovascular medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital. “However, 80 to 90 percent of heart disease is preventable with simple lifestyle changes. Lenox Hill Hospital is dedicated to providing the highest level of care and educating people about the importance of knowing their risk factors.”
Lenox Hill Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute of New York is among the leading cardiovascular care programs in the nation. US News and World Report ranked it among the nation’s top 50 cardiology and heart surgery programs.
