Lenox Hill Hospital Receives Robin Hood Foundation Grant For The Center for Attention and Learning

A recent leadership grant from the Robin Hood Foundation allows Lenox Hill Hospital’s Center for Attention and Learning (CAL) to hire two staff members who will  help children from low-income families throughout  New York City receive educational assessments and services.
This is the fifth straight year in which Lenox Hill has received a grant for CAL, part of the Hospital’s Outpatient Center for Mental Health, located at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital on East 64th Street. The center administers comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations to low-income New York City school children with attention and learning differences. CAL and the Robin Hood Foundation are committed to using educational tools to help break the cycle of poverty.

“The partnership with Robin Hood will enable us to specifically reach more families struggling with extreme poverty by offering them services they might otherwise not be able to obtain. We are extremely proud to count ourselves among the grant recipients the Robin Hood Foundation selectively supports,” John Gupta, Executive Director of Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital said. “This grant makes it possible for us to hire two post-doctoral fellows to evaluate more children in need of services and help them obtain educational programs that meet their learning needs.”

The center under the direction of Dr. Jamie Kay, Director, and Dr. Peter Pramataris, Clinical Director, was created to help NYC children, particularly those from low-income families, obtain comprehensive evaluations to help identify specific learning needs. The center provides a thorough evaluation to pinpoint the true nature of a child’s learning disability. Once it is understood why a child is struggling in school, recommendations are made to address the child's learning issues and get the help they need.

CAL receives more than 800 calls a year for evaluations, and the need continues to grow.  The Hospital will continue to seek additional funding from our donor community to meet this need.

“The North Shore-LIJ Foundation and Lenox Hill Hospital are grateful for our five-year partnership with the Robin Hood Foundation”, said Andrea Dowd, vice president, Development.  “Combining our efforts to help low-income children overcome learning challenges and succeed has been very rewarding.   We thank Robin Hood for their belief in our program and for their continued support.”
