New York, NY – Lenox Hill Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, presented the prestigious Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award to NY Rangers Player Mats Zuccarello for the 2015-2016 season.
This is the third year Lenox Hill Hospital has presented the award.
“Honoring Steven McDonald and what he stands for is an exceptional opportunity. Members of our corporate security team here tonight are former police officers and obviously have a special relationship with Steven and the police department. We’re so proud to be here,” said Michael Dowling, CEO and president of Northwell Health.
The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award recognizes the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty.” The award, which is voted on by the fans, is named after New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the call of duty on July 12, 1986. The award has been given annually since 1988 to the player who fans believe plays with extra effort on the ice.
Along with McDonald and his son, Connor, Dowling and four members of Northwell Health’s Corporate Security team presented the $25,000 check to the Steven McDonald Foundation. Jim Romagnoli, vice president of corporate security at Northwell Health, was a NYPD police officer on duty the night McDonald was shot.
“We’ve protected presidents and heads of state as NYPD police officers. But, walking out on center ice and being part of this with the McDonald family is one of the greatest experiences we’ve had. This one takes the cake,” Romagnoli said.
Lenox Hill Hospital is the official hospital of the New York Rangers.
