New York, NY – Lenox Hill Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, recently opened a state-of-the-art epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) so that doctors can better observe brain activity and pinpoint areas of the brain causing seizures.
The four-bed, in-patient unit is staffed 24/7 by dedicated faculty including, epilepsy trained doctors and nurses, a neuropsychologist and certified video-electroencephalogram (EEG) technologists. The EMU enables staff at Lenox Hill’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center to continue to offer the most advanced and safest treatments for epilepsy, including hard-to-treat cases.
“Our EMU is equipped with the latest technology to detect and pinpoint seizures,” said Souhel Najjar, MD, Northwell Health’s senior vice president and executive director, neurology service line. “In an EMU setting, we are able to offer our patients a safe and comfortable environment where they can be closely monitored as we look for changes in brain activity, enabling us to determine seizure producing areas. Once we have that information, our team puts together a customized treatment plan.”
Treatment can include alternate medications, deep brain stimulation or surgery to remove areas of the brain causing seizures. The EMU can also help to identify patients who have been misdiagnosed with epilepsy, helping them get the care that they ultimately need.
