NEW YORK, NY – Celso Tello, MD, an internationally renowned glaucoma expert, has been appointed chairman of ophthalmology at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital effective January 2015.
Dr. Tello previously served as associate director of the glaucoma service and clinical professor of ophthalmology at New York Medical College at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary (NYEEI). He completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowship training at the NYEEI and has been in practice there, as well as a partner of Glaucoma Associates of New York, for the past 15 years.
During his tenure at NYEEI, Dr. Tello was presented with the “Residents’ Award” for outstanding teaching, and the “Infirmary Award” for excellence in patient care and research. In addition to resident education, he has trained 86 clinical and research fellows.
Dr. Tello has lectured extensively on both his clinical work and research in glaucoma surgery and imaging. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and 19 book chapters. In addition, he has presented 175 scientific papers and has given 180 lectures and presentations, both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Tello is a member of many prestigious organizations, including the American Glaucoma Society for which he currently serves as chair of the organization’s nominating committee, and the New York Glaucoma Society of which he is currently president. He has been devoted to global health initiatives in ophthalmology and is president of the International Foundation of Ophthalmology-Ecuador. He previously served as chairman of the scientific section of the Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a past president of the New York Society for Clinical Ophthalmology.
