MANHATTAN, NY-- Zero scheduled deliveries without a medical reason for the entire year – the highest level of achievement possible – earned Lenox Hill Hospital the New York State Department of Health’s 2013 Quality Improvement Award.
Lenox Hill Hospital, which was honored in October, is among the 98 of 128 state-wide hospitals actively participating in the Obstetrical Improvement Project. The project’s main goal is to reduce scheduled deliveries without a medical reason between 36 and 39 weeks of gestation.
"Every week of pregnancy matters. Research shows that babies born full-term have better outcomes than those born preterm," said Phyllis Cohen, RN, Senior Administrative Director of Perinatal, Neonatal and Pediatric Patient Care Services. “Our team is highly committed to reducing risks associated with non-medically indicated obstetrical procedures and to delivering strong and healthy babies.”
Lenox Hill Hospital is renowned for its exceptional obstetrical service and handles approximately 4,000 deliveries annually. It is recognized nationally as a leader in maternal and child health. The Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine – a Center of Excellence for the hospital – is one of the most comprehensive in New York City and is staffed by board certified and internationally recognized perinatologists. It is comprised of 12 modern labor, delivery and recovery rooms (LDRs), a postpartum floor with rooming-in (the option to have the baby’s crib by the side of the mother’s bed), well baby nurseries, and a Level III Neonatal Critical Care Unit. In 2014, the hospital launched the OB Nurse Navigator Program, a unique resource that provides expectant mothers planning to deliver at Lenox Hill with personalized care and attention.
