Lenox Hill HealthPlex Readies for Debut

Four years after St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village closed, a freestanding emergency department is opening on Seventh Avenue. Lenox Hill HealthPlex, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, has its official dedication on July 9. It will start accepting patients in mid-July, said Dr. Eric Cruzen, the facility’s medical director. HealthPlex will be the first freestanding emergency department in Manhattan, and the second in New York City (after Westchester Square in the Bronx).

“We had the ability to design our facility from scratch,” said Dr. Cruzen. “Most New York City emergency departments are very old, so even when they’re upgraded and refurbished, they don’t have as many options as we did.”

HealthPlex designers wanted to have several intake points, and promise patients short wait times. A triage nurse stationed at the front door will send patients immediately to one of 26 private rooms or, for a lower-acuity patient, to one of six intake rooms. Patients with a sore throat or burn “don’t have to wait for the sick people to get done,” Dr. Cruzen said.

The 24/7 emergency department employs 150 staffers, with 30 staffers on site at peak times. They expect to see 45,000 patients a year. “We want to do more with observational medicine, and keeping people in their communities,” Dr. Cruzen said. “There’s less and less compensation for inpatient care, and we’ve realized that being an inpatient hospital is not always the best way to take care of people.”
