GREAT NECK, NY -- North Shore-LIJ today announced it has joined with the Spinney Hill community to host a farmers market running Sundays from July 14 to Oct. 27, 2013.
The market is part of “Healthy on the Hill,” a coalition comprised of local faith-based, community, housing and business organizations, Head Start, government and the North Shore- LIJ Health System. They have joined forces to improve the health of the residents of Spinney Hill by promoting healthy eating and active living. Local youths will be hired to work at the market, which will be held Sunday’s from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the health system’s corporate offices at 125 Community Drive.
The weekly sales are part of a community partnership between the health system; the Spinney Hill community; Sustainable Long Island, a local community based organization whose mission is to promote economic development, environmental health, and social equity for all Long Islanders; Long Island Green Market, an organization that runs farmer’s markets across Long Island; and the Greentree Foundation, which awarded NSLIJ a $10,000 grant to operate the market.
All products sold will come from the Long Island area, picked at the peak of ripeness and sold shortly after harvest by the people who cultivated them. In addition to providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables for the community, there will also be healthy cooking demonstrations and recipes provided. The market will also accept SNAP benefits through EBT as well as WIC produce checks.
