MANHASSET, NY – North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI) today announced that Jamie S. Ullman, MD, FACS, director of neurotrauma at North Shore University Hospital, has received the “2014 Distinguished Service Award” from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) at its annual meeting held Oct. 18-22 in Boston, MA.
“We are delighted that Dr. Ullman has received this prestigious award from the CNS,” said Raj K. Narayan, MD, FACS, North Shore-LIJ’s senior vice president of the neuroscience service line and executive director of North Shore-LIJ’s CNI. “We are proud to have Dr. Ullman as our director of neurotrauma. She is admired by her colleagues for her outstanding leadership qualities, her clinical expertise in neurotrauma and traumatic brain injury and her unwavering dedication to her patients.”
The CNS Distinguished Service Award is given to an individual with consistent, exceptional leadership and service to the CNS and an enduring contribution to its educational mission.
“Dr. Ullman has tirelessly served the CNS for years,” said Ali Rezai, MD, chair of the CNS Awards Committee. “She served as a member of our executive committee from 2007–2013 and as vice president in 2013. In addition, Dr. Ullman held one of our most distinguished and valuable volunteer positions as education committee chair from 2010-2012, helping the CNS achieve ACCME Accreditation with Commendation. Dr. Ullman exemplifies the ideal volunteer leader, taking tremendous care in fulfilling her obligations to the CNS and its membership, serving as a mentor to many up and coming leaders.”
In addition to her various roles at CNS, Dr. Ullman has held several other leadership roles as president of the Congress of American Neurosurgical Education and president of Women in Neurosurgery. She serves as a neurosurgeon specialist on the New York State Trauma Advisory Committee and on the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. She is currently chair of the AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care.
Dr. Ullman’s clinical interests include neurosurgical critical care, traumatic brain injury and neurotrauma, in addition to other brain and spinal disorders, adult hydrocephalus and trigeminal neuralgia. She has spoken and has been a panel member at various professional conferences regarding guidelines for the management of severe traumatic brain injury; improving disaster response in the U.S. and the role of the trauma system; and, the future of emergency surgical care in the U.S.
