Huntington Hospital to Perform Quicker Lab Tests

HUNTINGTON, NY – To more quickly confirm whether a patient has an upper respiratory infection such as influenza, Huntington Hospital has recently begun using a new laboratory testing system.

The system, called Biofire FilmArray, is a sophisticated molecular multiplex assay allowing for results to be returned within an hour rather than 24 hours. By providing confirmatory results within one hour, patients will spend less time at the hospital’s emergency department and treatment can be administered faster if necessary. With the implementation of this rapid test, the previous screening test won’t be necessary anymore, leading to a decreased overall cost to the patient and provider.

“Determining someone’s illness and beginning to treat it quickly is vital for the patient,” said Gary Stone, MD, associate chair of pathology and laboratory medicine at Huntington Hospital. “This faster laboratory test will also help Huntington Hospital’s emergency department to diagnose, treat and release patients faster.”

The 20 viruses and bacterial pathogens that this test can detect include:

  • Influenza A virus (H1, H1-2009, H3)
  • Influenza B virus
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV)
  • Parainfluenza virus (Types 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Enterovirus/Rhinovirus
  • Coronavirus (229E, HKU1, NL63, OC43)
  • Adenovirus
  • Bordetella pertussis
  • Chlamydophilia pneumoniae
  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae

Huntington Hospital is the first community hospital in the North Shore-LIJ Health System to have this kind of laboratory testing available.

For more information on these laboratory tests at Huntington Hospital, call Jon Zenker, administrative director of the laboratory, at 631-351-2319.
